A BETTER WAY TO BUILD A PATIO THAT’S EASIER, FASTER AND AT A LOWER COST
We just didn’t believe that the “dig a hole and fill it in” philosophy was necessarily the only way to build a patio. So we took our proven Performance Base layer technology that was originally engineered as an artificial turf underlayment for safety, and set out to design it for use under patio stones and pavers. We had been replacing stone bases under artificial turf for years, for the NFL, NCAA and your local high school.
So why not use the same knowledge and materials and apply them to your home? It was created in 2010, and since then Brock PaverBase™ has been accepted by Lowe’s, The Home Depot and Menards, since all three want you to build smarter, faster and save money.
THE GOAL OF THE BROCK PAVERBASE PROJECT
To create a way to build a quality, durable patio that would not break your back.
So we developed Brock Paverbase, a semi-rigid panel system made from Code 5 Polypropylene, an environmental material known for it’s durability, resilience, and thermal insulation qualities.
It’s the same material you find in Tupperware, furniture, cars and hundreds of other useful products.
Each panel has a “tire tread” texture to lock the panels into the thin sand layer below. The overlapping edges form a seamless “floor” for the pavers, a floor that spreads the load over the ground to help prevent the pavers from settling. Drain holes allow water evacuation, and the panel dimension was chosen for easy transport and installation. The material can be easily trimmed with a utility knife, so don’t worry about any obstacles. Polypropylene is also an insulator, so it helps prevent against frost heaving in the soils.
THE RESULT IS AN EASIER PATIO OR GARDEN PATH FOR THE DO-IT-YOURSELFER!
Brock PaverBase replaces the traditional rock base used under pavers, since each panel replaces 4-5 bags of the dirt base you would have to use. If you do the math, it’s less expensive. Since it is so lightweight, Brock PaverBase is especially convenient for backyard patios and paths, where access is often difficult. It’s like carrying hundreds of pounds of rock base with a single hand. Pavers lay down and slide in place easily, so you don’t have to worry about the tedious job of leveling the sand as you go. Homeowners around the country have tried and enjoyed the result of building smarter.
We have provided all the information you need on this website, whether you are building a new patio over the ground, over a concrete slab, or even if you are using natural stone. There are even calculators to help you compile your list of materials. And if you have any questions, you can call and talk with one of our experts. *NOT engineered for driveways or other areas with vehicle traffic.
Good luck and have fun!
Brock PaverBase system characteristics when compared to traditional base construction:
Q: Can Brock PaverBase really spread the load over the subgrade so the patio will stay flat?
A: A 250 lb weight placed on a single paver over Brock PaverBase results in less than 7 psi on ground. Because it comes in panels, it is a great load spreader.
Q: What happens to the material over time? Does it degrade?
A: Polypropylene has a LONG life and is proven in many construction materials, such as pipes, geofabrics and rope. It is chosen because of its durability and its resistance to mold, bacteria, decay, cracking and in the case of pavers, compression.
Q: A stone base has insulating properties and protects the ground from freezing and heaving. How does Brock deal with this?
A: 20mm PaverBase provides the same thermal insulation properties of 9″ stone. It has the same “R” value as EPS so it is essentially similar to the Polystyrene used to insulate houses, only much more durable to withstand a paver application.
Q: Does Brock PaverBase drain?
A: Brock Paver base, with a vertical permeability rate of over 100″ per hour, and far exceeds the permeability rate of the pavers themselves. Brock PaverBase also drains both vertically and horizontally to move water quickly away from the area.
Q: How much do the panels weigh?
A: A bundle of Brock PaverBase panels that covers a 55 Square foot area weights 12 lbs. That is about 1/100th the weight of the stone required over the same area. You can put 600 square feet of base in the back of a pick-up truck, and one person can move it.
Q: How do I cut the material to fit?
A: Brock PaverBase can be cut with a razor knife for curves and edges, so no special tools are required.
